June 6 Update

Filed under: Uncategorized — by ginnysmith @ 4:04 pm

Dear Family & Friends,

Yesterday, Ginny met with her oncologist for a update. Blood levels seem to be holding eventhough she still has shifting bone pain from the back, hip and sternum.  Because of this the doctor has put on hold for now the medical proceedure that addresses her “hot spots” on the spine to relieve the pain. This possibility will be up for evaluation as we continue through the chemo cycles. If the pain seems to localize and be specific a kephoplasty will be considered again. Until then she begins the 2nd of six chemo cycles this Thursday. The final cycle is hoped to be completed some time in September.  At that point Lord willing she will be elgible for a stemcell transplant. Right now Ginny has some stronger days than others and some up days as well as down days.

We are overwhelmed with the continual flow of cards, letters, emails, blog messages and visits.  She isn’t up to many visits yet. Our goal is to get her to see the children in her school class. She misses them and her teacher friends. We also hope to get her to a church service or music concert when she has enough strength. Until then we are just trying to get her feeling better while continuing the chemo treatments which have various side effects.

Our great friends from the church have organized a team of women to care for Ginny five days aweek. They tenderly care for her and help with house chores without a complaint from her grateful husband. He is able to go to church and put in a reduced weekly schedule that includes preaching and performing weddings. For this he is so grateful.  The church also is feeding us with wonderful meals.  Her husband is adjusting his belt and trying to see his shoes. All he sees now is the tip of the shoe. Some exercize and discipline are in order. We just don’t know how to thank each of you for these many ways of showing Christ’s love for us.

Ginny’s sister, “Dorthy from Kansas”is returning to spend some time with us. She is a welcome addition to Ginny’s day.  Our daughters, son n laws and grandchildren continue to care for us in so many ways. One of them is assigned “daughter of the day” (DOD). We even have a “grand-dog” we call “Therapy-Dog”. How’s that for a complete caring family?

Thanks to all of you who express your care in so many different ways. We are doing well…somedays a little more rested than others and somedays a little more encouraged than others but we keep trusting the Lord. We cling to various biblical promises, each with hope. “in faithfulness you have afflicted me. Let your steadfast love continue to comfort me according to your promise to your servant. Let your mercy come to me, that I may live..” (Ps. 119:75-77)

We don’t know our Lord’s plan but we know His heart. It is good! We don’t know his purpose but we know His power. It is omnipotent! We don’t know the future but we know His promise….eternal life!…it begins now and goes on forever more.

We are Christians! Christ is our portion!

  1. Dear Ginny & Don
Rich & I continue to hold you and your family up in prayer as your journey takes the ups and downs and all the curves in the road ahead. We will be praying however, for a straight road, firm, smooth pavement and a relief in your pain Ginny as God takes you though this, holding your hand all the way. Your sweet presence is much missed at church. We are grateful that Don shares what our Lord is showing him and teaching him personally along the way. I know that you also will have much to share of the depth of love you have felt from our Lord.

    In Christ

  2. You are on my mind and heart- Praying for you pain to be relieved- and September will bring treatment.

  3. This blog is such a blessing for those of us who do not see Ginny…and long to somehow “touch” her with our prayers for her healing, the relief of her pain, and comfort for the two of you (and your family). How wonderful that you both are touched and watched over by God’s hands through your family and congregation.
Isaiah 43:2…When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.
I will be praying for you, Ginny, that you get to the school soon to see your kids!
Thoughtfully in Christ, my Portion Susan

  5. Ginny,
I chuckled when I read that your sister, Dorothy, from Kansas, is coming. I remember the first time you mentioned her many years ago at school and how I laughed at the name and location. I’m sure she will be a welcomed face to see. My prayers continue for you all and you are so blessed to have such a wonderful family so close to you not to mention your church family. Reading these blogs has brought me such comfort. I’m certain your class is anxious to see you too. Stay strong in Christ’s love and care my dear friend. Rose

  6. Dear Ginny-

Not a day goes by that I am not reminded of you and this battle you’re facing. We are all praying you through it and we will have to celebrate in a big way when the doctors announce you are cancer free…..we’ll all eat lots of M and M’s!! Watch the mail for a gift from me. I hope you’ll like it and find it useful these days. I am anxious to talk to you when you are strong enough…by the way, I’m officially a mother-in-law now! Robin was married over Memorial Day weekend. I remember when we came to Valencia together, Christy had just gotten married…..now she’s the mother of those beautiful children. Time races by!Take care, watch lots of I Love Lucy, and thank-you to Don for keeping us updated on your condition through this site. All my Love, Debby James

  7. Hi Ginny
Encouraged to hear you would like to come to school to see the kids and us. We miss your smiling face. Saw rae on Wed. and she said she talked to you. We all think of you with love and prayers all the time. Today was the volunteer tea. It was lovely, the second grade team did a great job. Only 10 more days of school, but who’s counting? I’m almost done with my report cards. Sure like your sub, Tracy. What a sweetie she is. Saw Kathryn Peck for art. She brought the twins who are now in Hawaii for their surfing graduation trip. Colby is going to Oxford this summer so they are all going over.

God bless you and Don and your family. As hard as it is now, you blessed to have such a blanket of care and love from so many. Love, Nancy xoxox

  9. Ginny,
Found your blog through a friend. Strangly enough I think of you often through the years every single time I run. When I was about 7 or 8 you sang this song (while EV Free sunday school was still in trailers). “To win is to do my best, and I’m running for the prize. To win is to do my best, with Jesus by my side”. I always sing that song every time I run and I begin to pray while exercising. Funny but it has had a major impact on my life. Thank you for that little thing I bet you never even remembered. Praying for you often.

  10. Dear Pastor Don and Ginny~

My family and I were members of the church about 2 1/2 years ago and are now in Arizona. I just heard that you were ill from a past attendee/friend. May God richly bless you and your family with strength, peace, and joy during this time. My family will be praying for you and your family.
